Domain Registration
There are literally hundreds of domain registrars to choose from, but choosing the right one is a very important decision. Choose the wrong one and you could lose control of your domain (either through malice or accidentally).
- Keep your hosting and domain registrations separate. Good hosts generally make poor registrars, and good registrars generally make poor hosts.
- Make sure the registrar supports custom nameservers. (If you don't know, ask before you sign up.)
- Make sure the registrar lets you set and unset domain locking to prevent someone from stealing your domain out from under you.
- Make sure the registrar has real tech support, email or phone.
- Do a Google search on your registrar and get a feel for what people are saying about them. (As with any Google search, one bad or glowing review does not research make.)
- Shy away from registrar resellers (people who buy in bulk and sell domain names for someone else). If you can't contact that one person, you may not be able to get control of your domain until it expires.
- Once you register a name, you can't change registrars for 60 days. (That's an ICANN rule.)

- GoDaddy - They are big, and they will try to add on services. But as far as registrars go, they have it all--phone support, custom name servers, lock/unlock ability, etc.--and are very inexpensive.
