Migrating AWStats

For: People migrating their website to Mysticserver.

When you'd like to incorporate the stats built up at your previous host into Mysticserver's AWStats installation.

At your old host, the AWStats monthly summary data is held in the folder where AWStats is installed. At my last host it was /htdocs/webstats

The default AWStats naming convention is awstatsmmyyyy.txt. ex. awstats032005.txt. FTP these files to your local machine. All the rest of the files in that folder are temporary files, or generated on-the-fly by AWStats.

The Mysticserver default installation stores the data files in ~/tmp/awstats/ (where ~ is /home/username). They've altered the naming convention to include the domain name. ex. awstats032005.domain.com.txt Therefore, you need to rename the files to match.

After that, it should Just Work.

Recommendation: I found that the default configuration included hits on a lot of files I wasn't interested in. FrontPage helper files in particular. They cluttered the stats. You cannot make changes to the configuration file in the default Mysticserver installation. It will copy back the default configuration before running, wiping out any changes. Therefore, I recommend that you install your own copy of AWStats. It's reasonably easy to do. Just follow the instructions at the AWStats home page. As an additional recommendation, if you do that then password protect your AWStats folder. The data files contain enough user information that can help a hacker guess what he needs to break into your site.
