Usenet Newsgroups
Usenet is the original 'net' forum. It goes back more than 20 years. Nowadays you can find newsgroups that cover just about any topic you want. Google runs a great
Usenet search tool∞ with archives that go back a full 20 years!
Binary Newsgroups
There are many active binary newsgroups that offer music (mp3, ogg, etc), movies (dvd, vcd,
DiVX), applications (Windows, Mac, Linux), and games. There are also literally hundreds of picture newsgroups. To get a good idea of what binary files are out there right now, go to
Newzbin∞ and do some browsing.
Accessing Binary Newsgroups from Windows
For accessing binary newsgroups, you will want a few tools:
- a good news reader, like newsbinpro∞ ($35.00);
- a news aggregation service, like Newzbin∞ ($0.50 a week); and
- a reliable news server that retains messages for 30 days, like Usenet Monster∞.
So, you have the parts, now what? First, you install
newsbinpro∞ and set it up for your news server, (i.e.
Usenet Monster∞). Then you browse
Newzbin∞ and find the posts you want, save the .nzb file, and open it with
newsbinpro∞, which will automatically download, organize, and reconstitute the files.
Once your download is done, you will need to uncompress it (.zip, .rar, .r00, etc). For that, you will want Winzip and/or Winrar.
